Internet Information Sharing for Transit Maintenance
Report Number: IDEA-15
The project designed and tested the use of the Internet infrastructure and the World Wide Web system to share maintenance information between transit properties and develop guidelines for adoption of the system by transit maintenance facilities. Regional government officials and public transit agencies were surveyed to explore and establish a practical means of sharing transit maintenance information on the Internet. A site on the World Wide Web (www.transpo.net) was developed, and a workable system architecture for sharing information among transit agencies was designed. The contractor also provided model, low-cost Internet terminals and connections to participating agencies and obtained input from participating maintenance managers for further development and refinement of the concept. The research has shown that the Internet is a viable approach for transit agencies to mutually interact in transit maintenance functions.
