Sleeved Column System for Crashworthiness of Light Rail Vehicles

This project explored the feasibility of incorporating a low-cost lightweight energy absorbing structural design in transit rail vehicles for collision protection based on the sleeved column technology. The sleeved column energy absorbing system will be designed using low-cost lightweight material, and preliminary tests will be performed at medium- and high-speed impacts up to 50 mph. Based on test results, the design will be refined in terms of improving energy absorption and dissipation capacity, mitigating structural damage, and repairing damaged elements. The refined system will be field tested to demonstrate the system's effectiveness for light rail vehicle applications.
