Transit Scrachitti Removal by Controlled Fire Polishing
Transit Scrachitti Removal by Controlled Fire Polishing
Report Number: IDEA-28
This project developed an innovative approach to repair scratches on subway car windows by using controlled fire polishing. The concept is that by positioning an intense heat source near the scratched window, a locally thin layer of the glass can be softened and allowed to re-flow under its own surface tension, thus erasing the scratches. This project developed a cost-effective approach to fixing problems of significant costs. The system was tested on subway car windows in cooperation with New York City Transit (NYCT). This project received good press coverage, including a feature article that appeared in the New York Times newspaper.
