Fare Machine Tactile/Audio Instruction System (FMTAIS)
Fare Machine Tactile/Audio Instruction System (FMTAIS)
Report Number: IDEA-29
This project tested and documented a practical system to make fare vending equipment usable by individuals with vision impairments. Working with staff from the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority/Tri-Rail and the National Federation of the Blind of Florida, the project developed a fare machine/patron interface that makes automatic fare machines fully usable by persons with vision impairments. This was done through the design, installation, and testing of a complimentary system of raised letter, Braille, tactile pathway and instructions on the face of the fare vendor that is complimented by an audible, sythesized voice instruction system.
