Karen Walton was born and raised in New Jersey, but left at the age of 18 to join the Navy. After 12 years of training and handling drug and patrol dogs for the Military Police, she moved to Wasilla, Alaska. She attended the University of Alaska Anchorage and received a BA in Psychology then a Masters in Public Administration. After working as a social worker for numerous years, she was asked to be the Executive Director of a small start-up 501(c)(3) transit system in Wasilla (Sarah Palin’s office was right down the hall). After 10 years she is still hooked on public transportation.
Karen has also held the position of Director of Safety & Security of Sun Metro in El Paso Texas, and General Manager of the University of Texas Miner Metro transit system. Two and half years ago Karen was asked to come to Sioux Falls to head up the Sioux Area Metro system. Karen and her husband Ron, who is a retired Anchorage Police Officer, recently bought a house by McKennan Park and have settled in with their stinky mutt Max. She has been an active Rotarian for the past 9 years in Alaska, Texas, and now at the Sioux Falls Downtown Club. She loves to travel and has a goal of having a martini in all 50 states (currently up to 31).
