Research Results Digests - What Are They?
Reports
Products of TCRP research are generally published in the form of reports issued by the Transportation Research Board. TCRP reports cover subjects with a wide variety of applications reflecting the diverse nature of project work undertaken on behalf of the industry. Through original research, new data collection, and analysis, the researchers look for new solutions for existing problems. Reports may be released in the form of handbooks, design manuals, analysis tools and can contain spread sheets and check lists so that the reports become useful tools for the transportation industry. In addition to bound reports, and CDs, TCRP reports are available on the web in PDF format.
Syntheses
In addition to research reports, the TCRP program includes a Synthesis Series. A synthesis is a summary of existing practice in a specific technical area based on a literature search and survey of relevant agencies. Syntheses cover various practices, making specific recommendations where appropriate but without the detailed directions usually found in handbooks or design manuals. Nonetheless, these documents can serve similar purposes.
Syntheses search out and assemble useful knowledge from all available sources, especially from practitioners, and report on current practices in the subject. Each synthesis is a compendium of the best knowledge available on measures found to be successful in resolving specific problems and records practices that were acceptable within the limitations of the knowledge available at the time of its preparation. The Synthesis is an immediately useful document that is tempered by the user's knowledge and experience in the particular problem area. As the process of advancement continues, we expect new knowledge to be added to that which is now at hand.
Legal Research Digests
Legal Digests address current legal issues in the transportation industry. They include a wide range of subjects from Rail Right Of Ways For Transit, to Transportation Service Agreements, to Civil Rights. They are written by attorneys for transit attorneys.
Research Results Digests
Like reports, Research Results Digests contain a variety of subjects and provide a means of giving people interim reports on longer research projects when it is deemed important to the industry to release information before the completion of the report. This format is also used when the results from a larger project do not require publication as a report.
